BUSY BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND WITH MOTORBOAT RALLY TO FRANCE AND ROUND-THE-ISLAND RACE IN ALDERNEY

What a busy and enjoyable weekend this turned out to be!

Friday 22 May – Monday 25 May:

First Motorboat Rally Alderney to Cherbourg – St. Vaast – Cherbourg – Alderney

Brief report by our Commodore Ellis Downes:
This weekend’s Alderney Sailing Club Motor Boat Rally was, in the opinion of all who took part, the best ever!
On Friday 22nd May, eight boats with 29 intrepid explorers set off for Cherbourg. We moored up together and had great fun exploring Cherbourg before eating at the Cafe de Paris restaurant for supper.
The following day we set off around the coast to St Vaast, a charming town about 22 miles further round from Cherbourg. After carefully checking the tides and the opening times of the harbour because of the gates at the entrance, we all made it round without any issues.
Once we were safely moored up, we explored the charming streets, had an aperitif or three and had an amazing supper at the Tomahawk restaurant under the watchful eye of its owner Maryvonne who rules the restaurant with a rod of iron, and a warm smile ( think Liz Hope). Ben & Maz won the “Decorated Fender “ competition with their unique design !
The following day we made our way back to Cherbourg where we overnighted before returning to Alderney, most boats arriving at lunchtime, our boats mostly weighed down with French produce and a bottle or two of “grape juice” !
We arrive back in Alderney blessed with great weather, flat seas, new relationships made, existing friendships strengthened and the joyful camaraderie of fun times on the water which is the very essence of Alderney Sailing Club.

This weekend saw ten yachts and 35 crew from Brixham Yacht Club holding a rally to Alderney where they were hosted by Alderney Sailing Club.

Their visit coincided with Alderney Sailing Club’s first of this year’s Round Alderney Race which gave five of the Brixham boats the opportunity to take part in the race.

Overall winner was a Brixham boat Blues skippered by Dan Pedrick. Line honours went to another Brixham boat Gusto skippered by Mark Smith (Brixham Yacht Clubs Vice Commodore).

First Alderney boat was Second Wind skippered by Neil Collings with fellow club members Andy Myleham and Gwynne Lewis as crew.

This is Brixham’s third visit to Alderney and Mark said they will make this an annual visit.

ASC Sailing Secretary Boyd Kelly presented the prizes thanking Brixham for visiting Alderney and enjoying the island’s hospitality.
