STRONG STORM WARNING – THURSDAY 8 JANUARY

SORRY – BUT DUE TO THE STRONG STORM WARNING FOR TOMORROW THURSDAY 8 JANUARY – THE SAILING CLUB WILL BE CLOSED THIS THURSDAY NIGHT

STAY SAFE – STAY AT HOME!

Our decision is based on the warning below issued by the States of Alderney:

Tomorrow evening Storm Goretti is expected to hit the Bailiwick, with the potential of extremely high winds, with gusts up to Force 12, and heavy rainfall.
Officers from across the public sector met today to put plans in place, and while we are awaiting a final forecast which will be issued tomorrow morning, current projections are that the island could experience serious storm weather through Thursday evening and into Friday.
On that basis, we are asking islanders to stay at home tomorrow evening and overnight for their safety.
Winds are projected to peak at 2100 tomorrow (Thursday) and continue into the early hours of Friday. Wind speeds are not expected to significantly pick up until around 1800.
We’d also ask people to secure their properties; check their gardens for anything that needs to be secured to reduce the risk of flying debris.
The Alderney Harbour Authority have advised that in order to reduce the risk of exposure to the severe wind and tidal conditions, public access will be restricted to the Harbour Facility from 1600 tomorrow afternoon (8 January):
• The Commercial Quay gates will be locked
• Vehicular access to the Admiralty Breakwater will be controlled by barriers placed on the western end of the Glacis road
• Access to the inner harbour will be controlled by barriers at all entrances and exits
The States of Alderney would encourage boat owners to check that their vessels are secure in advance of the forecasted storm force winds and for all residents to avoid coastal areas until the storm has subsided.
