PUSHING THE BOAT OUT FOR THE LAYING-UP SUPPER 2021

Considered by many as Alderney’s glitziest annual event, this year’s Alderney Sailing Club Laying -Up Supper proved no exception.

The nautical-themed decorations completely transformed the otherwise stark Island Hall which was decked out with spinnakers, flags and pennants from sailing clubs around the world

DJs and cocktail dresses got their much-awaited airing and the prosecco welcome reception set the scene for a great night ahead for Alderney Sailing Club members and their guests including visiting commodores from Guernsey and Jersey.  This year’s guest speaker was keen Guernsey sailor Richard Babbé who talked about his experiences as a former Concorde pilot.

Then it was time for the awards presentation. This year’s trophy for the winner of the first Around the Island Race in June went to Richard Babbé.

Highly accomplished Alderney sailor and former Alderney Sailing Club Commodore Tess Woodnutt received two awards: a trophy for the first local boat completing the Round the Island Race with POLAR STAR, and a second trophy was presented to Tess for coming first on handicap in the Alderney Regatta’s Round the Island Race. (The prizes were presented by Sue Ewart).

The formal part of the evening having been concluded, everybody headed for the dance floor to bop the night away to the sound of Alderney’s fabulous Dan McHale Band. “After the many Covid-19 restrictions experienced this year, clearly everybody was determined to have a great night out”, said Alderney Sailing Club Commodore Hugh Harrison. “We were very fortunate to be able to host this popular event and were pleased that we could welcome commodores from Guernsey and Jersey this time. We are particularly grateful to the Georgian House team who produced an excellent dinner and slick service for over 70 guests on the night.”

Visiting commodores from Jersey were James Wilding (RCIYC), Bruce Harrison (St. Helier Yacht Club) and Ben Rogers (St. Catherine’s Sailing Club), and from Guernsey Julia Schaefer (RCIYC Guernsey) and former commodore Richard Babbé).
