During the Spring and Summer 2019, over 40 youngsters took part in the RYA Junior Dinghy Sailing Courses organised by Alderney Sailing Club. These 1-week long courses are open to kids aged 10 to 16 and each course concentrates on a different level of seamanship: starting with Stage 1, through to Stage 2, Stage 3 and Stage 4 and ending with the Seamanship and Start Racing course.
Some of the kids earned their certificates from a special 3-day “Start Sailing” course organised for Year 6 students in July which was fully subsidised by the Alderney Sports Foundation. All local youngsters who took part in the summer courses were also subsidised by the Alderney Sports Foundation.
The courses proved popular and were highly successful: in total some 40 youngsters participated and completed their respective courses, some even qualifying across several classes.
At a special reception at the Sailing Club on Saturday evening 7th December, Commodore Tess Woodnutt presented a dozen of the young sailors with their well-earned certificates.
But for all others who could not be here for the occasion, there will be a separate presentation in the New Year (date to be confirmed).
